Along with taps, baths and many other plumbing innovations, we also have the Ancient Romans to thank for basins. Their original function was simply as a vessel to hold still, warm water for people to wash their hands and faces, placed around the bathhouses. This concept continued into the 16th Century, where the wealthy would deploy washstands in their bedrooms. The design of washstands developed over the next couple of centuries until the idea of washing in one place became fashionable in the 19th Century and the bathroom was born. At Stiffkey Bathrooms we are passionate about beautiful antiques – here you will find French and English basins and sinks which have been meticulously sourced and restored.
